Winning and supplying top quality, fluvial and marine aggregates for the construction industry has been for many years among the core activities of DEME. DEME has made substantial investments in this sector enabling the company to go further offshore.
Right at the beginning of the 20th Century, our company Ackermans & van Haaren started its gravel dredging business in the River Meuse in Belgium. In addition, DEME has been involved for many decades in gravel dredging off Le Havre and Dieppe in France and it has been supplying French gravel processing companies.
Recently, the DEME Group substantially boosted its presence in the winning and supply of fluvial and marine aggregates when it took the decision to invest in two large gravel trailing suction hopper dredgers ‘Charlemagne’ and 'Victor Horta'.
These pioneering vessels are unrivalled in the gravel dredging sector. They were both built and fully equipped with a state-of-the-art dry discharge installation and have the potential to win sand and gravel to depths of 65 m. These vessels offer DEME’s gravel specialist, DEME Building Materials (DBM), the opportunity to win aggregates further offshore.
