Awareness

C.H.I.L.D. campaign

In 2010 C.H.I.L.D. was launched, an ambitious safety and prevention project that aims to increase the safety awareness of all personnel, thereby focusing on proactive awareness. One of the most important factors in the C.H.I.L.D. approach is that it is driven by top management.

In 2016 the CHILD program was renewed as C.H.I.L.D.5, scheduled to cross the original concept of simply trying to raise awareness and to foster a DEME DNA Safety Culture. A Company Safety Culture in which our attitude towards safety is believed to be essential in performing our Daily Activities and through our behaviour assures a safe work environment free of risk and injury at all times.

To build this DEME DNA Safety Culture, four construction pillars have been identified:

Engagement: My active participation and commitment will make a difference.

Collaboration: Only as a team we can deliver excellence.

Communication: I openly communicate to ensure everyone participates.

Leadership: I take the right action at the right time and lead by example.

C.H.I.L.D. Award

In 2012, the International Association of Dredging Companies presented its prestigious Safety Award to DEME's C.H.I.L.D. campaign.

Safety Moment Day & Safety topic of the month

Each year, DEME organizes a Safety Moment Day, addressing different issues each time.

By means of different 'Safety topics of the month', DEME intends to provide a complete toolbox at every turn in order to transmit the various safety issues to people regarding projects and vessels.

The toolboxes do not contain an abundance of information, but they are a good starting point to discuss the issue with employees.

IMPACT

DEME works tirelessly to reduce the number of injuries and environmental incidents and encourages our employees to report any incident, near miss, unsafe situation, unsafe act, improvement proposal and observation through our IMPACT system. It is a specialized and centrally managed software package for managing and monitoring incidents, assessments and their related action.

Our Safety Hazard Observation Cards make it possible for external parties to participate in the continuous improvement of the company. DEME makes its data transparent to its employees so we can all work on improving the standards.

"As a result of our joint efforts, the Lost Time Incident Frequency Rate has decreased dramatically over the past few years, declining 51% last year in comparison to 2012."
