DEME has secured a large contract (1) for the Abu Qir port project in Egypt. The project will see the deployment of DEME’s giant new cutter suction dredger ‘Spartacus’.
A major contract for the construction of the Ravenna Port Hub in Italy has been awarded to a consortium including DEME’s subsidiary Dredging International and Italian construction company Consorzio Stabile Grandi Lavori.
DEME hosted a special digital naming ceremony for its next generation trailing suction hopper dredgers ‘Bonny River’ and ‘Meuse River’. Although it was not possible to have DEME’s usual naming ceremony given the coronavirus restrictions, the online event captured the spirit of the occasion and honoured all the traditional rituals, including smashing a bottle against the hull. A particular highlight was the 360° virtual tour on board, which was hosted by DEME’s captains and crew.
Ghent University receives a VLAIO Baekeland grant with support and cooperation from Jan De Nul Group, DEME Group, and the Portuguese marine institute CCMAR for its doctoral study 'PLANT ME'. This research into the sustainable protection of vulnerable coastal areas aims at using seagrasses. The presence of seagrass is decreasing worldwide due to poor water quality, plant diseases, climate change and coastal erosion. With the innovation project 'PLANT ME', the research team wants to enable the restoration of this ecosystem by developing a new planting technique for seagrass.
DEME has joined the European Clean Hydrogen Alliance, supporting the EU’s ambitious hydrogen and decarbonisation strategy. With this membership DEME underlines its commitment to use its expertise for the production, transport and storage of green hydrogen from renewable energy sources.
DEME launched its first ever Service Operation Vessel (SOV) at the CEMRE shipyard in Yalova, Turkey, marking a major milestone in its fleet history. Named ‘Groene Wind’, the Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull (SWATH) vessel will be deployed for wind farm maintenance activities.
