Until 1968 there was a gasworks on this location which has caused severe soil contamination. Because the contamination was at risk of spreading to the deeper groundwater, it was decided to start remediation.
The remediation was carried out in phases because the existing gas holder and water tower had to be conserved. The contamination consisted of mineral oil, BTEX(N) and cyanide, among others. Since the site is located near water, the contaminated soil could be removed by ship.
This resulted in a minimal impact on the surrounding area and on the environment during the execution of the project.
