The dredging and reclamation works of the New Port of Tangier comprises the dredging of a 1.2-km long access channel, a turning basin and the reclamation of three main quay locations (3.2 km).
Building the New Tangier Port called for the dredging and reclamation of some 4 million m³.
Works started with the Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger, “Lange Wapper” which dredged the Eastern area for the reclamation of the first so-called pre-fabrication area.
After this first campaign, a Cutter Suction Dredger (Vlaanderen XIX) was mobilised for the dredging along the container quay wall and for the reclamation of the container terminal and part of the grain quay. This second campaign consists of dredging an area of about 2 mio m³.
The mobilisation of this large CSD was necessary in order to cope with the potential presence of rock outcrops in the dredging area. The third stage consisted of the realisation of the final dredge level and work on the remaining reclamation areas.
