Tanger Med Port Extension

Challenge

Tanger-Med is a major logistic platform. Its unique location makes it a strategic hub at the crossroads between the Mediterranean and the Maghreb countries. At some 35 km east of the city of Tanger, the new port is facing the Strait of Gibraltar where 100,000-odd vessels transit every year. At full capacity, Tanger-Med will cover an area of 500 km² and employ 145,000 people in three duty free zones.

Open for business since September 2007, Tanger-Med is an ambitious project that will gradually be enlarged as business is growing.

It is built, developed and managed by the Moroccan agency ‘Agence Spéciale Tanger-Méditerranée’ (TMSA) under terms of a public-private partnership. Already between 2004 and 2005, Dredging International was closely involved in the construction of the first phase (TM-1).

Less than one decade after the groundbreaking ceremony, the Tanger-Med deep-sea port already needed to be extended. The port is booming and heralds a double-digit outperformance. The growing figures and positive perspective for the near future made TMSA decide to launch a port extension project, known as TM-2.

Our solution

At the western flank of Tanger-Med 1, the port expansion Tanger-Med 2 will add an additional capacity of 5 million containers, and provide two new deep-water terminals (CT-3 and CT-4) along quay walls with a total length of 2,800 m. When finished, the total container handling capacity of the two ports will amount to 8.5 million TEU. The Tanger-Med 2 project has been split in two phases, with first priority the construction of most of the protection breakwaters, as well as one container terminal (CT-4).

The scope of work for DEME in this projects consisted of dredging some 300,000 m³ of sand to fill caissons, installed for the construction of the main breakwater. In order to cope with the presence of rock outcrops in the dredging area, Dredging International assigned its brand-new self-propelled heavy duty cutter suction dredger Ambiorix to dredge the access channel, turning basin, and berths.
