The narrow passage in the Amsterdam-Rijn Canal produced by the locks island constituted an increased safety risk.
By taking away the locks island the constriction was removed. This created a wide lane for shipping.
Besides shipping, nature was also given more space thanks to the project, with the installation of a natural bank as a stepping stone to adjacent nature reserves.
During the works there was little or no negative impact on shipping, due to the traffic regulations implemented, including e.g. dynamic signs.
