What we do

Challenge

The Scheldt Tunnel forms a key component of the Oosterweel Link project in Antwerp, Belgium. The approximately 1.8 km-long immersed tunnel will improve mobility around the city and includes two road tunnels, an escape tunnel and a dedicated cycling tunnel.

Within the project, DEME was responsible for the underflowing of eight tunnel elements and a closure joint. Approximately 63,000 m³ of sand was installed beneath and alongside the tunnel elements, creating a stable foundation for the structure. The works were carried out using electrically driven equipment and continuous monitoring to ensure precise execution.

The project combines marine engineering expertise, precision execution and innovative construction techniques to support one of Belgium's largest infrastructure projects.
